Boost for HVO in river transport on the Seine
27th September 2024
Sogestran Logistics and Hapag-Lloyd formalize their agreement in the second half of 2024: all containerized volumes transported on the Seine Axis for Hapag-Lloyd are now carried by Sogestran Logistics on barges powered by HVO.
A major step forward in the democratization of decarbonized transport solutions on the Seine
Since March 2023, Sogestran Logistics has been offering the first river container transport service powered by HVO in France, through its SoBlue service, operating on the Le Havre – Rouen – Gennevilliers line. This service is already being used today by several clients. The signing of the contract with Hapag-Lloyd is a significant milestone, as it covers all containerized volumes transported on the Seine Axis for the shipping company between July and December 2024.
A new step in Hapag-Lloyd’s decarbonization strategy
The agreement with Sogestran Logistics around HVO is a further realization of Hapag-Lloyd’s decarbonization strategy. The company aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire fleet by 2045, achieved through the use of alternative fuels. It is also committed to reducing emissions related to upstream and downstream transport from maritime operations.
River transport is inherently an eco-friendly mode: one of our barges on the Seine is equivalent to 200 fewer trucks on the roads, thus reducing CO2 emissions, traffic congestion, and accidents. Using HVO reinforces this positive commitment.
HVO: A concrete solution for decarbonizing river transport
The use of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is the result of several years of technical and logistical work on alternative fuels to diesel, conducted by Sogestran Group’s engineering office.
Thanks to the test phase launched in March 2023, Sogestran Logistics has observed a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions.
